The Omega Nebula, also known as Messier 17, is a spectacular H II region in the constellation Sagittarius, discovered in 1745 by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux. This star-forming region lies between 5,000 and 6,000 light-years from Earth and spans about 15 light-years in diameter. It is one of the brightest and most massive star-forming regions in our galaxy, with an estimated 800 solar masses.

Visitors can expect to see a rich starfield, with the open cluster NGC 6618 embedded in the nebulosity, causing the gases to shine. The nebula contains up to 800 stars, including 9 of spectral type O, and is one of the youngest known clusters at just 1 million years old. Notable features include the luminous blue variable HD 168607 and the blue hypergiant HD 168625.

The Omega Nebula has a rich observational history, first sketched by John Herschel in 1833 and later studied by many astronomers. Its distinctive shape, resembling the Greek letter omega, has been captured in detailed drawings over the centuries. Recent observations by SOFIA in 2020 have provided new insights into this cosmic wonder.
