In Italy the story was adapted for the stage in 2011 by Filippo Ottoni. In the story, a group of friends gather every Wednesday evening for a tradition they call the "cena dei cretini", where each guest must bring someone judged to be stupid and laugh at him all evening.
The publisher Pierre Brochant picks François Pignon and invites him to his home for an aperitif. After Pignon arrives, events spiral: Pierre's back seizes up and his wife Christine says she means to leave him.
