Gera

Gera is Thuringia's third-largest city, a former textile and residence town along the White Elster river where late-19th-century merchant villas sit alongside socialist-era blocks. It is the birthplace of painter Otto Dix, whose childhood home is now a museum, and its compact old town survived World War II largely intact.
