Battle of Ideas at Balderin Sali Hall, Helsinki

Battle of Ideas is a festival of debate held on 31 October 2026 at Balderin Sali Hall in Helsinki. The Helsinki event is a day of panel discussions on political, social and cultural issues, with a lineup of European and Finnish speakers. The festival is annual and international, and has been running for over 20 years.

Each year it begins with a two-day event in London in October and then expands across Europe. Three debates are in Finnish and three are in English. The programme includes panel debates titled Populism: giving the people a voice?, War on words?

The battles over language, Dystopia versus Utopia: is AI changing everything?, GenZ: the lost generation? and Independence: does the nation state still matter?. The closing panel debate asks Free speech: should we have the right to be offensive?

Lunchtime shorts include Meet the authors: Eric Kaufmann and Frank Furedi on cultural renewal, and Europe’s free-speech crisis: launching the fightback. A drinks reception runs from 18:45 to 19:30.

Entry is for ages 18 and over, and a ticket costs 12.50 euros. Academy of Ideas organises the event in association with Suomalaisuuden Liitto.
