Timisoara

The spark of revolution, reborn

Timisoara is Romania's elegant western outlier: pastel Habsburg-era facades, baroque and secessionist architecture, and three grand connected squares (Unirii, Libertatii, Victoriei) that give it a distinctly Central European, 'Little Vienna' feel rather than a typically Romanian one. As the 2023 European Capital of Culture, it still carries that momentum, with a strong coffee and cultural scene, free public-square events, and the Bega River running through the centre. It's also the city where Romania's 1989 revolution against communism began, and that history is woven visibly into its identity.
