Ash are a rock band formed in 1992 in Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland, by schoolfriends Tim Wheeler (vocals, guitar), Mark Hamilton (bass) and Rick McMurray (drums). Guitarist and vocalist Charlotte Hatherley was a member from 1997 to 2006, expanding the group to a quartet during its most commercially successful period. The band's sound spans pop-punk, power pop, alternative rock and elements of Britpop.
Their 1996 debut album 1977, released while the members were still teenagers, was later named by NME as one of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Follow-up releases Nu-Clear Sounds (1998) and Free All Angels (2001) consolidated the band's UK chart presence, and they have continued to record, with albums including Meltdown (2004), Islands (2018) and Ad Astra (2025).
Ash have placed 18 songs in the UK Singles Chart top 40, including "Girl from Mars," "Goldfinger," "Burn Baby Burn" and "Shining Light," the last of which won Best Contemporary Song at the 2002 Ivor Novello Awards. Their song "Kung Fu" featured in Jackie Chan's film Rumble in the Bronx. The band has earned multiple gold and platinum certifications in the UK across a career now spanning more than three decades.
