About Modest Mouse

The band built its early reputation on jagged, angular guitar work and stream-of-consciousness lyrics, drawing on indie rock, post-punk, emo, and folk influences. Critical acclaim came with the albums The Lonesome Crowded West (1997) and The Moon & Antarctica (2000), which are frequently cited among the definitive indie rock records of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Modest Mouse achieved mainstream commercial success with Good News for People Who Love Bad News (2004), which produced the hit singles "Float On" and "Ocean Breathes Salty." Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr joined the band in 2006, contributing to We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (2007), which became the group's first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Founding drummer Jeremiah Green died in December 2022. The band continued and released An Eraser and a Maze in June 2026 with a reconfigured lineup featuring Simon O'Connor on guitar, Damon Cox on drums, and Keith Karman on keyboards, alongside Brock.
