Schwerin
Schwerin is the small lake-ringed capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, built around a castle on its own island that now houses the state parliament. Twelve lakes sit within the city limits, and a largely undamaged old town of church spires and cobbled squares makes it a compact base for boat trips and walking.
