The workshop gives a practical introduction to the basics of metal casting. Participants learn the individual work steps from making a mould to the finished cast part and carry them out themselves under expert guidance. The course leader is Volker Allexi, Maschinenbaumeister, author and trainer, who has offered casting courses for many years.

The workshop contents include handling moulding boxes, moulding patterns in sand, creating casting and ventilation channels, important basics of casting technique, and information on material properties and occupational safety. Short insights into the history of metal casting and into technical and scientific connections supplement the practical work. Later in the workshop, metal – brass or aluminium – is heated in a melting furnace and poured into the prepared moulds while observing all required safety measures.

Participants thus experience the entire casting process from mould making to the finished workpiece. Metal casting is a traditional craft that can rarely be experienced directly today. The workshop offers the opportunity to get to know this technique in the historical ambience of the Sensenhammer and to try it out practically and creatively.
