The castle was completed around 1600 and later burned down in a war. It was rebuilt as a Baroque palace at the beginning of the 18th century, and the Schlosskapelle (today Asamsaal) was designed by Cosmas Damian Asam. From 1733 the castle was used as a guest house, military hospital and Unteroffizierschule, until it passed into the ownership of the city of Ettlingen in 1912.
