The story follows the disappearance of 23 people a year on average from cruise ships worldwide, none of whom had ever returned until the small Anouk reappears half a year after vanishing, holding a teddy bear that is not hers. The police psychologist Martin Schwartz then receives a mysterious call telling him to travel to England and come aboard the "Sultan of the Seas", the cruise ship on which his wife and son disappeared five years earlier, a case the police treated as a joint suicide. The teddy bear of his son has now been found on board.

The ship sets off for New York with 3,000 passengers, a traumatised girl, a shaken police psychologist and a murderer on the hunt. The Berliner Kriminal Theater has specialised entirely in crime and thriller productions since 2000, when its founders Wolfgang Rumpf and Wolfgang Seppelt established it. In 2003 it moved into the building complex of the Umspannwerk Ost in Berlin Friedrichshain, where the ensemble still performs.
