The Freiburger Oratorienchor performs Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Requiem KV 626 - Evgeni Orkin, Briefe aus dem Schatten at St. Martinskirche in Freiburg on 15 November 2026, 19:00. Tickets start at EUR 20, and a discount is available. The Requiem in D minor, KV 626, dates from 1791 and is Mozart's last composition.
Mozart left it as a fragment, and Süßmayr completed it from sketches. One sketch, for an Amen fugue, was discovered in 1960 by the German musicologist Wolfgang Plath. The fugue was probably intended as the ending of the Lacrimosa.
Because this fugue is to be performed, the choir uses the completion by Richard Maunder rather than Süßmayr's. The orchestra L'arpa festante commissioned Evgeni Orkin, a composer living in Germany, to write a piece that can be played as a musical bridge to the Mozart Requiem. The result, Briefe aus dem Schatten, was premiered in Heidelberg last October.
It sets letters by Leopold Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his youngest son Franz Xaver Mozart. The soloists are Karla Massouh (soprano), Luzia Ernst (alto), Florian Cramer (tenor) and Friedmann Röhlig (bass). The Barockorchester L'arpa festante plays, and Bernhard Gärtner conducts.
