Best places to visit in Denmark in 2026

Denmark is compact, flat and extremely easy: Copenhagen to Aarhus is under three hours by train, and you can cycle almost anywhere once you arrive. Most trips are Copenhagen plus one, and that is a good trip.

1. Copenhagen — three nights and a bike

Copenhagen rewards walking and rewards cycling more. Rosenborg Castle (140 DKK) holds the crown jewels; Christiansborg’s Reception Rooms (120 DKK) are in the working parliament; the Round Tower is 40 DKK for the spiral climb and the view; the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (150 DKK) pairs antiquities with a palm-filled winter garden, and is free on the last Wednesday of the month.

Nyhavn and the Little Mermaid cost nothing and take twenty minutes between them. Tivoli prices dynamically by date and time, so there is no single adult figure to quote — check the day you want.

  • Best for: design, food at every price level, cycling, an easy first Nordic city.
  • Less ideal if: you are watching the budget — this is one of Europe’s more expensive cities.

2–4. Aarhus, Odense and Aalborg

Aarhus is the second city and the best single addition to a Copenhagen trip: ARoS with its rainbow rooftop walkway, and Den Gamle By, an open-air museum of relocated Danish townhouses. Odense is Hans Christian Andersen’s birthplace and built a genuinely good museum around him. Aalborg has a reinvented waterfront and, just outside town, Lindholm Høje — a Viking and Iron Age burial ground on a hill over the fjord, free and quietly extraordinary.

FAQ

Does Denmark use the euro?
No — the currency is the Danish krone (DKK), pegged to the euro but not replaced by it. Card payment is near-universal, including for small amounts, and many places no longer take cash at all.
Is the Copenhagen Card worth it?
It can be, since it bundles transport with entry to most of the museums and castles. Add up the specific places you intend to visit first — several of Copenhagen’s best sights (Nyhavn, the Little Mermaid, the harbour baths) are free, which shifts the maths.
How many days do you need in Copenhagen?
Three nights. That covers the castles, the Glyptotek, a proper wander through Christianshavn and Nørrebro, and a day trip — Roskilde’s Viking ships or Louisiana, the modern art museum up the coast, are both under an hour.
