The Ford Five Hundred was a full-size sedan produced from 2005 to 2007, designed to rethink the traditional sedan formula with a tall cabin and elevated seating. It was a direct result of Ford's acquisition of Volvo Cars in 1999, leveraging Volvo's P2 platform for the D3 platform shared with the Mercury Montego and Ford Freestyle.
Styled by George Bucher under J Mays, the Five Hundred featured a minimalist exterior and a spacious interior with high H-point seating marketed as Command View. It offered optional all-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission, but its 203-hp engine and unassuming styling drew criticism, leading to sales that fell short of projections.
Despite its short run, the Five Hundred influenced Ford's design language with its three-bar grille, and the nameplate continued outside North America. It was later facelifted and rebadged as the fifth-generation Ford Taurus for 2008.
