Discover Georgia

Georgia sits in the South Caucasus between the Black Sea and the mountain wall that divides it from Russia. The Greater Caucasus carries peaks above 5,000 metres along the northern border, and the Lesser Caucasus rises in the south. The west is humid and subtropical, with tea and citrus; the drier east holds most of the vineyards, where qvevri winemaking in buried clay jars is UNESCO-listed intangible heritage.

Tbilisi is the capital, stacked along the Mtkvari below the Narikala fortress, with sulphur bathhouses in the old town. Batumi is the Black Sea counterweight: a pebble beach, a seafront park and a subtropical climate. Kutaisi is the western river city and a former royal seat, Mtskheta the ancient capital, Signagi a walled town in the wine country, and Stepantsminda the base under the high Caucasus.

Top places in Georgia

  • Tbilisi — The capital on the Mtkvari: Narikala fortress above the old town, brick-domed sulphur baths at Abanotubani, and Rustaveli Avenue below Mtatsminda.
  • Batumi — Adjara’s Black Sea resort: a pebble beach and seafront boulevard, a high-rise skyline, and a botanical garden on the coast north of town.
  • Mtskheta — The ancient capital where the Mtkvari and Aragvi meet: Svetitskhoveli Cathedral below, Jvari Monastery on the ridge above, both UNESCO-listed.
  • Kutaisi — A former royal capital on the Rioni in western Georgia, below hilltop Bagrati Cathedral, with the UNESCO-listed Gelati Monastery in the hills nearby.
  • Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) — The Georgian Military Road town in the Greater Caucasus, with Gergeti Trinity Church on a ridge below the glaciated cone of Mount Kazbek.
  • Signagi — A walled hill town in Kakheti wine country, looking over the Alazani valley to the Caucasus, with Bodbe Monastery just outside.
