Frederick Douglass & His Irish Connections is a 2 hour 15 minute walking tour in Dublin on 14 February 2027, meeting outside The Ambassador Theatre.
Frederick Douglass & His Irish Connections is a walking tour in Dublin on 14 February 2027, meeting outside The Ambassador Theatre. The walk commemorates the visits Frederick Douglass made to Ireland in 1845 and 1846 and the mutual influence each had on the other. Douglass (1818 to 1895) was an African American abolitionist, orator, publisher and author.
Recently escaped from slavery, he arrived in Dublin in 1845 and stayed four months, overseeing the publication of his first autobiography, delivering lectures and meeting political activists including Daniel O'Connell. He made four more visits to Belfast in 1846. The tour visits places in Dublin associated with Douglass during his time in the city, including the Rotunda Meeting Rooms (now the Ambassador Theatre), the site of the former Music Hall on Abbey Street, the Daniel O'Connell Statue and Home, the National Gallery of Ireland, the Mansion House, and the Friend's Meeting Rooms on Eustace Street.
The tour is set against political change in Ireland, including relief for Irish Catholics in the practice of their religion, while many Catholics still lived in poverty and a famine affected the land. The tour lasts 2 hours 15 minutes and only takes small groups.
Tickets cost €27 for adults, €22 for seniors and students, and €15 for children aged 12 to 18 with an accompanying adult. Children under 12 with an accompanying adult go free.
