Malta Village Festa Calendar 2026–2027: Every Date, Confirmed or Predicted

From May to September, a different Maltese or Gozitan village lights up almost every weekend for its festa — the annual feast of the town's patron saint. It is not one event but a season: dozens of parishes, each with its own date, its own two rival band clubs, and its own fireworks display competing informally with the village down the road.

On this page

Quick answer

The core of a festa — the High Mass, the evening statue procession, the marching bands and the fireworks — is the same everywhere; our sister guide, Malta feasts and wine festivals, covers that format in full and profiles Lija's ġiġifogu ground-fireworks and the Delicata Wine Festival. This guide is the calendar: when the season's most-searched feasts actually fall in 2026, what we could verify for 2027, and where our own event pages stand.

Every date here carries a source. Where a parish or Archdiocese listing gives the exact day, we call it confirmed. Where we're projecting a published recurring-date rule ("last Sunday of July", "first Sunday of August") forward to 2027, we call it predicted — and where we found no rule at all, we say so rather than guess.

The 2026–2027 festa calendar: confirmed vs predicted

Malta festa dates aren't published on a fixed multi-year calendar the way, say, a bank holiday is — each parish and band club confirms its own weekend, usually a year or less out. But most of the villages below follow a long-standing weekly pattern (a specific Sunday of a specific month) that has held for years, which is why a 2027 estimate is possible — just not guaranteed. Always check the parish or band club's own announcement closer to the date.

Valletta Pageant of the SeasGrand Harbour, VallettaFri 24 Jul 2026Could not confirmUnknown — occasional/irregular event (2016, 2018, 2022, 2026), not annual; no next edition announced

Notes on the lower-confidence rows

Marsaxlokk's Our Lady of Pompei feast: three independent 2026 listings (the Archdiocese of Malta, Malta Event Guide/Visit Malta, and Maltavents' 2026 guide) all put it on Sunday 2 August 2026 — the same weekend as Qala's confirmed "first Sunday of August" feast just across the water in Gozo. But Marsaxlokk's own Wikipedia infobox gives the rule as "5th Sunday in July or 1st Sunday in August" while the article's body text says "last Sunday of July" — Wikipedia contradicts itself here, so we've flagged the 2027 projection as lower confidence rather than treating the August pattern as settled.

Xwejni Music Fest is a secular summer concert at Xwejni Bay (between Żebbuġ and Marsalforn, Gozo), not a religious festa, and we could not find a published recurring-date rule for it — only that it has run in past Julys (22 Jul 2023, and a 2025 edition around 26 Jul). We list the 2026 date as it appears on our own event page, but did not find independent third-party corroboration of that specific 2026 date, so treat it as the least-verified entry on this list.

The Valletta Pageant of the Seas is organised by the Valletta Cultural Agency and is not an annual fixture — prior editions ran in 2016, 2018 and 2022 before 2026, an irregular multi-year gap rather than a fixed cycle. There is no announced next edition; do not expect a 2027 return.

What actually happens at a festa

Most festi run Friday or Saturday through Sunday. The days before the main weekend bring street decorations (statues, lights, silk banners) and a run of band marches, as the town's rival band clubs — nearly every Maltese village has two — parade their own repertoire through the streets in competing uniforms. The climax is Sunday: a solemn High Mass, then an evening procession carrying the parish's statue of its patron saint through decorated streets to hymn and brass-band accompaniment.

Fireworks come in two distinct forms, and a festa weekend usually has both. Ground fireworks (ġiġifogu) are set off in daylight or early evening in the village square — spinning wheels, catherine wheels and set-piece displays are the spectacle, not height. Aerial fireworks (murtali) follow after dark, launched from a field outside the village, and are what most visitors picture when they think "Malta feast fireworks" — the loud daytime petards some villages still fire are a separate, older tradition signalling festa days are approaching.

None of it needs a ticket. Festi are free, open-air, and run by volunteers and the band clubs' own fundraising — you pay only for food, drink or merchandise from the street stalls.

Beyond the village calendar: the Pageant of the Seas

Not every Malta summer spectacle is a village festa. The Valletta Pageant of the Seas is a civic, not religious, event: a maritime choreography in the Grand Harbour organised by the Valletta Cultural Agency, mixing a traditional luzzu boat, live music, kayaks and yachts with a fountain show, laser projections and a closing fireworks display over roughly two hours. The 2026 edition ran Friday 24 July at Ta' Liesse, free to attend.

It's an occasional event, not an annual one — prior editions in 2016, 2018 and 2022 before 2026 — so there's currently no confirmed next date to point a visitor to. Our only existing page for it sits on a Greek-locale URL with a slug typo ("peageant" instead of "pageant"), which is a data/redirect issue for the site team rather than something this guide can fix; see the Pageant-of-the-Seas recommendation in the accompanying sprint notes.

Planning a festa weekend

  • Confirm the exact days close to your visit — parish and band-club Facebook pages post the finalised programme, and weekends do occasionally shift.
  • Arrive by early evening for the statue procession; the aerial fireworks finale is typically late (often after 22:00 or later).
  • Villages are walkable but fill up — public buses run to every locality above; St Paul's Bay, Marsascala and Marsaxlokk are also easy day trips from Valletta or Sliema, while Qala is a short bus ride from the Mġarr Gozo ferry terminal.
  • Bring cash for street food and stalls — many festa vendors are small, informal setups without card readers.
  • If two feasts overlap on the same weekend (common in late July), pick one for the procession and fireworks, and treat the other as a shorter, earlier-evening visit.

FAQ

When is the Marsaxlokk feast (Our Lady of Pompei) in 2026 and 2027?
The 2026 edition runs 1–2 August, with the titular Sunday on 2 August 2026 — confirmed by the Archdiocese of Malta's 2026 feast calendar and Malta Event Guide. A 2027 date isn't officially confirmed yet; if the same weekend pattern holds, it would fall around Sunday 1 August 2027, but Marsaxlokk's own published sources disagree on the exact recurring rule, so treat that as a lower-confidence estimate.
When is the Qala festa (San Ġużepp) in 2026 and 2027?
Qala's Festa San Ġużepp runs 1–2 August 2026, with the titular day on Sunday 2 August. Qala's own published rule is "first Sunday of August" every year, which would put the 2027 edition on Sunday 1 August 2027 — a prediction, not yet an official confirmation.
What is Xwejni Music Fest and when does it happen?
Xwejni Music Fest is a free open-air concert at Xwejni Bay, on the Żebbuġ/Marsalforn boundary in Gozo — not a religious festa. It has run in past Julys, and our listing has the 2026 edition on Saturday 25 July 2026, but we found no published rule for its date and no confirmed 2027 edition.
When is the Balluta festa (Our Lady of Mount Carmel) in 2026 and 2027?
The 2026 Balluta feast falls on Sunday 26 July. Balluta's published pattern is the last Sunday of July every year, which projects to Sunday 25 July 2027 — predicted, not yet confirmed by the parish.
When is the Feast of St Anne in Marsascala in 2026 and 2027?
Marsascala's Feast of St Anne falls on Sunday 26 July 2026. Its Wikipedia infobox lists the recurring day as "last Sunday of July," which would put the 2027 edition on Sunday 25 July 2027 — a prediction from that published pattern, not an official confirmation.
What is the Valletta Pageant of the Seas and when is the next one?
It's a free maritime spectacle in the Grand Harbour — boats, music, fountains, lasers and fireworks — organised by the Valletta Cultural Agency. The 2026 edition ran Friday 24 July 2026. It is not an annual event (previous editions: 2016, 2018, 2022), and no next edition has been announced, so there is currently no confirmed 2027 or 2028 date.
Are Malta village feasts free to attend?
Yes. Every feast on this page — the Mass, the procession and the fireworks — is free and open-air. You only spend money on food, drink or merchandise from the street stalls.
