Why Portugal?

Portugal sits closer to Germany than most people expect: Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Cologne all run direct routes to Lisbon, Porto or Faro, most under three and a half hours.

The Algarve in the south is the country's beach destination, with cliffs, coves and around 300 days of sunshine a year keeping it reachable outside the peak summer months, while Lisbon and Porto work as year-round city breaks.

Compared with France or Italy, accommodation, dining and car rental remain cheaper across much of the country, which combined with the short flight makes Portugal one of Western Europe's better-value destinations.

Where to stay

  • Lisbon The capital spreads across seven hills above the Tagus, pairing its historic tram network and the Belém district with a dense nightlife scene and easy day trips to Sintra and Cascais.
  • Porto Portugal's second city sits on the Douro river, known for the Ribeira old town, the Dom Luís I bridge, and its role as the gateway to the Douro Valley wine region.
  • Faro Faro is the Algarve's main gateway, home to the region's largest airport, a compact old town, and direct access to the Ria Formosa nature reserve.
  • Vila Nova de Gaia Across the Douro from Porto, this is where the traditional port wine lodges cluster along the Cais de Gaia riverfront.

Flights from Germany run roughly €60–250 depending on season and airline (TAP, Lufthansa, Ryanair, easyJet); double rooms in Lisbon or Porto typically cost €70–150 a night, more on the Algarve in summer; food and drink average cheaper than in Germany.
