Why Portugal?

Portugal is one of the most visited destinations for French travellers, helped by direct flights from Paris, Lyon, Nice, Toulouse and Marseille with flight times usually under three hours. The country draws both short city breaks and longer beach holidays, and a resident French community has settled durably, particularly in the Algarve and around Lisbon.

The Algarve accounts for most French summer arrivals, driven by its golf courses, sheltered beaches and dry climate from May to September. Faro serves as the entry point for the whole region, from Lagos to Tavira, and many French nationals own a second home there or spend winters in the area.

Lisbon and Porto remain the preferred destinations for short trips, with a lower cost of living than Paris for accommodation and dining. Porto stands out for its listed historic centre and proximity to the port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, while Lisbon combines historic neighbourhoods with quick access to the Atlantic coast.

Where to stay

  • Lisbon Portugal's capital, roughly 2h25 from Paris, with a dense historic centre and direct access to the Atlantic coast.
  • Porto The country's second city, known for its UNESCO-listed centre and the wine cellars across the Douro river.
  • Faro The Algarve's main airport, about 2h35 from Paris, serving the region's beaches and golf courses.
  • Vila Nova de Gaia Porto's twin city on the south bank of the Douro, home to the main port wine houses.

A trip to Lisbon or Porto typically costs 60-90 EUR per day per person for mid-range accommodation and meals, compared to 100-150 EUR in Paris for a comparable standard; in the Algarve, prices rise significantly in July-August, particularly for rentals and golf.
