Turkey straddles Europe and Asia, split by the Bosphorus at Istanbul and edged by four seas — the Black Sea, the Marmara, the Aegean and the Mediterranean. Inland rises the Anatolian plateau, cut off from the southern coast by the Taurus mountains and layered with Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman remains.
