Turkey straddles Europe and Asia, split by the Bosphorus at Istanbul and edged by four seas — the Black Sea, the Marmara, the Aegean and the Mediterranean. Inland rises the Anatolian plateau, cut off from the southern coast by the Taurus mountains and layered with Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman remains. The Aegean and Mediterranean coasts run to long, hot summers and mild winters; the Black Sea coast is greener and rains all year, and the interior turns to snow.

Istanbul is the metropolis — imperial mosques, Byzantine churches, a strait full of ferries. Ankara, capital since 1923, is the administrative city, home to Atatürk’s mausoleum and the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. Antalya and Bodrum anchor the resort coasts, Izmir brings Aegean city life, and Cappadocia and Pamukkale are landscape first: eroded tuff valleys in one, white travertine terraces in the other.
