Mabel Matiz: Turkish pop singer-songwriter

He took the name from two words that inspired him: "Mabel" comes from the Turkish novel Kumral Ada Mavi Tuna by Buket Uzuner, where it is the nickname of Tuna, one of the main characters, while "Matiz" is an old Greek slang word meaning "drunk". He has released six studio albums. He began releasing his own songs via Myspace in 2008, and Turkish music producer Engin Akıncı noticed them and offered him an album.

His first studio album, Mabel Matiz, came out in 2011 with the Esen Müzik label; apart from two songs written by Birhan Keskin and Yalçın Tosun, he wrote and composed the rest himself. His second studio album, Yaşım Çocuk, was released in 2013 with the DMC label and included a cover of the Yıldız Tilbe song "Aşk Yok Olmaktır"; songs from it such as "Zor Değil", "Aşk Yok Olmaktır", "Yaşım Çocuk" and "Alaimisema" became popular hits, and Milliyet Sanat named it "Album of the Year". In June 2013 he performed a Sezen Aksu cover, "Sultan Süleyman", for the Aysel Gürel tribute album Aysel'in.

In 2025 the Interior Ministry filed an obscenity complaint against him over his song "Perperişan" and, according to his lawyers, imposed a travel ban on him; according to Bienet, this is the first case of an individual song being targeted through the courts in Turkey. He grew up as the son of a truck driver and Cyprus veteran father, Ali, and housewife mother, Maya. As a child he had a severe stutter that made it hard for him to express himself, and he overcame it by building his self-esteem through writing and music; by high school he was playing in a theater company.

After completing his compulsory education in Mersin, he moved to Istanbul for university and graduated from Istanbul University, Dentistry Faculty in 2008, briefly working in a healthcare clinic before moving into music. He is an LGBTI+ rights activist.
