The Fisherman's Friends bring their authentic Cornish sea shanties to Nottingham for a night of folk music and humour. The group, hailing from Port Isaac, have been performing locally since 1995 and are known for their a cappella style, often accompanied by traditional instruments like accordion and guitar. Their repertoire includes both shanties and other nautical songs, some with a lewd twist, delivered with a large dash of humour.
Attendees can expect a lively performance from the current members, including Jeremy Brown, John Lethbridge, Jason Nicholas, Toby Lobb, John McDonnell, Jon Cleave, and Bill Hawkins. The group's history is deeply rooted in the sea, with most members having worked as fishermen, coast guards, or lifeboatmen. Their rise to fame began when BBC Radio presenter Johnnie Walker discovered their homemade CDs in 2009, leading to a record deal with Universal Music Group.
This concert offers a rare chance to see a semi-professional group that typically tours only in November and February/March. Their performances blend traditional songs of the sea with contemporary folk music, creating an engaging and authentic experience.
