Caen
Caen is a Normandy city rebuilt after heavy WWII bombing around two surviving medieval abbeys and the castle William the Conqueror founded here before his 1066 conquest of England. It sits inland from the D-Day beaches and is a common base for visiting the Normandy landing sites.
