Italy events calendar 2026-2027: what's on, month by month

נבדק על ידי Wanderistan editorial team · עודכן לאחרונה: 6 באוג׳ 2026

Italy runs two calendars at once. The outdoor one — village sagre, open-air concerts, coastal festivals — peaks from June to September and then stops almost overnight. The indoor one — theatre, opera, live music, exhibitions — opens in September, builds through autumn, and holds until late spring. Most of the year, one of the two is at full strength.

Quick answer

That matters more than it sounds. A trip built around an open-air festival in November will find very little; a trip built around a concert season in August will find the venues shut. The month you pick decides what kind of events exist, not just how many.

Below is what each month is actually like, the fixed holidays that reshape it, and the upcoming events we track across Italy.

Italy month by month

MonthWhat dominatesPlan around
AugustCoast, islands, lakes and open-air festivals; cities run a reduced programmeFerragosto (15 August) is a public holiday and the peak of the Italian holiday month — many independent shops and restaurants in cities close for a week or two
SeptemberThe indoor season opens: theatre, opera and concert programmes restart. Harvest sagre beginThe strongest all-round month — still warm, everything open, full programme
OctoberAutumn food fairs across the north and centre: truffle, chestnut, wine and mushroomPiedmont and Tuscany weekends book out early; the indoor programme is at full strength
NovemberThe densest indoor month of the year. Christmas markets open in the Alpine north late in the monthAll Saints (1 November) is a public holiday; weather is the trade-off for the programme
DecemberChristmas markets, nativity scenes, concerts and New Year8, 25 and 26 December are public holidays; transport and museums switch to holiday timetables
JanuaryEpiphany closes the festive season; ski season in the Alps and Apennines; cities at their quietest1 and 6 January are public holidays. Among the cheapest months for a city break, but some coastal towns shut entirely
FebruaryCarnival season, and the indoor programme continues without a breakCarnival ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday — 47 days before Easter — which places it in February in 2027
MarchIndoor season still running; spring starts in the southEaster falls on Sunday 28 March in 2027, with Easter Monday (Pasquetta) a public holiday the next day
AprilShoulder-season travel peaks; the open-air season startsLiberation Day (25 April) is a public holiday and frequently bridges into a long weekend
MayOutdoor festivals ramp up as the indoor seasons close1 May is a public holiday and widely observed
JuneOpen-air festival season proper; several cities hold their patron-saint feastRepublic Day (2 June) is a public holiday
JulyPeak outdoor season — coastal, hill and lakeside festivalsCities are hot and busy; the events worth travelling for are mostly outside them

The two seasons, and why the switch is so sharp

The indoor season is contractual, not casual. Italian theatres, concert halls and opera houses sell subscription seasons that open in autumn and close in spring, which is why the same venues that carry four events a week in November carry none at all in August. Live-music venues follow the same rhythm because the touring calendar does.

The outdoor season is the mirror image and is organised locally rather than institutionally. Sagre, patron-saint feasts, open-air concerts and town festivals are put on by comuni, parishes and volunteer committees, they cluster in the warm months, and their dates are set fresh each year — which is why a calendar like this describes the season rather than promising specific editions.

September and, at the other end, late April and May are the overlap months: warm enough for the outdoor programme, late or early enough for the indoor one. They are the best value in the year if the trip is flexible.

The holidays that move everything

A handful of fixed dates reshape the calendar around them. 15 August empties the cities and fills the coast. 8 December opens the Christmas season. 25 December and 1 January close most of the country for a day each. And when a holiday lands on a Tuesday or a Thursday, many Italians take the day in between — the ponte, or bridge — which turns it into a four-day weekend and fills trains and hotels nationally.

Where the calendar is densest

Milan, Rome and Turin carry the deepest programmes by a clear margin, with Florence, Bologna and Naples close behind — between them they account for most of the indoor season. Genoa, Padua, Bari and Verona all sustain a real calendar of their own, and the smaller Tuscan, Emilian and Piedmontese towns come into their own during the autumn food-fair months.

FAQ

What is the best month for events in Italy?
September, if you want both seasons at once — the indoor theatre and concert programmes reopen while the weather still supports outdoor festivals. November is the densest month for indoor events specifically, and July is the peak of the open-air season.
Is there anything on in Italy in August?
Outdoors, yes — the coast, the lakes and the hill towns are at their busiest, and Ferragosto on 15 August is the centre of it. Indoors, very little: theatres and concert halls are between seasons and many city venues close for their annual break.
When do Christmas markets start in Italy?
The Alpine markets in Trentino and South Tyrol generally open in the second half of November and run to around Epiphany, but each organiser sets the exact dates fresh every year, so confirm on the official market site before booking travel around them.
When is Carnival in Italy?
Carnival ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which is 47 days before Easter Sunday, so it moves with Easter. With Easter on 28 March in 2027, Carnival falls in February that year. The celebrations run for the days and weekends leading up to that final Tuesday.
How far ahead should you book around Italian events?
Accommodation around any public holiday, and any ponte long weekend, should be booked well ahead — domestic demand, not international, is what fills those dates. Autumn food-fair weekends in Piedmont and Tuscany are the other regular sell-out. Outside those windows, a few weeks is usually enough.
