The Nations Championship is a biennial international men's rugby union competition established in 2023, with its inaugural season beginning in 2026. It brings together twelve national teams across two regional conferences in a unified global league format, replacing a patchwork of standalone test series with a structured competition and an annual champion.

About Nations Championship

The European Conference comprises the Six Nations unions, England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales, while the SANZAAR and Pacific Conference comprises Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa alongside two invited unions, Fiji and Japan. Each team plays all six unions from the opposing conference across the mid-year and end-of-year international windows.

Following the conference matches, teams are paired by final standing for additional cross-hemisphere fixtures, with the top-placed team from each conference advancing to a decider that closes the November international window. The competition runs only in even-numbered years, so as not to conflict with Rugby World Cups or British & Irish Lions tours, which occupy the alternating calendar.

As a newly created tournament, the Nations Championship gives mid-year and end-of-year test matches, previously organised as standalone series, a formal league structure and a defined path to an annual global champion. The format ties fixtures that were once treated as standalone friendlies into a season-long standings race between the twelve participating rugby union nations.
