René Sydow was born on 10 April 1980 in Radolfzell am Bodensee and grew up on the Höri peninsula on Lake Constance. He is a German writer, cabaret artist, actor and director. He worked at the Staatstheater Stuttgart and studied at the WAM film academy in Dortmund from 2001 to 2005, making short and feature films with Daniel Hedfeld.
Sydow began performing as a poetry slam author and cabaret artist in 2012, placing third at the German slam championships that year and winning the North Rhine-Westphalia title in 2018. He has published the novels Der Reiher (2012) and Die große Sehnsucht, and the collection Deutsche Wortarbeit (2013). His cabaret combines political satire with literary texts, and a 2024 report in the newspaper Die Rheinpfalz described his programme as questioning ideas that are widely regarded as morally right.
His solo programmes include Gedanken! Los! (2014), Warnung vor dem Munde! (2016), Die Bürde des weisen Mannes (2018), Heimsuchung (2020) and In ganzen Sätzen (2023). His awards include the Kleinkunstpreis Baden-Württemberg development prize (2015) and main prize (2024), the Deutscher Kabarettpreis development prize (2016) and the Prix du Cabaret (2017).
