About The Beat

Their debut album, I Just Can't Stop It, released in 1980, reached number three on the UK Albums Chart and produced the hit single Mirror in the Bathroom, which peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart. Further hits, including Save It for Later and Hands Off... She's Mine, followed on the albums Wha'ppen? and Special Beat Service in 1981 and 1982.

The band split in 1983, with Wakeling and Ranking Roger forming General Public, and Cox and Steele founding Fine Young Cannibals with singer Roland Gift. Because an unrelated American band already used the name The Beat, the group performed as the English Beat in North America while retaining The Beat as its name in the UK and Australia.

Both strands of the band have continued to tour: Dave Wakeling has led the English Beat in the United States, while Ranking Roger fronted a UK version until his death in 2019, after which later line-ups have carried the Beat name forward.
