Erlangen
Erlangen is a compact Franconian university town north of Nuremberg, its identity split between Friedrich-Alexander University students, Siemens engineers, and — for eleven days each year — over a million visitors to the Bergkirchweih beer festival, held on the wooded Burgberg since 1755. Outside festival season it's a quiet, well-kept Baroque town of pastel townhouses, the Schlossgarten, and winding old-town alleys with a genuinely academic, unhurried pace.
