In the story, Kate Somerset has until now led a conservative life together with her younger sister Becky under the watchful eye of their brother George and the reliable care of the housekeeper Mrs. Brown. Her refusal to accompany her brother to a charity concert turns everything upside down, because that evening Ben breaks into her house. Not only Kitty Kelchester, a neighbour and friend, but also Becky's very curious fellow student Kim ensure that the family is drawn into an adventure, since Detective Slade must not see through the true circumstances either.
