In the story, Kate Somerset has lived a conservative life with her younger sister Becky, under the watchful eye of their brother George and the care of housekeeper Mrs. Brown. Her refusal to accompany her brother to a charity concert changes everything when Ben breaks into her house that evening. Kitty Kelchester, a neighbour and friend, and Becky's inquisitive fellow student Kim involve the family in an adventure, while Detective Slade must not see through the real circumstances.
