The piece follows Die Brieffreundschaft, which premiered in 2021, when markus&markustheaterkollektiv built up correspondences with four women serving life sentences for murder. The question asked most often after the performances is: “Are you still writing to your pen pals?

” The answer given is: Yes. Die Brieffreundschaft II makes visible what happens in five invisible years in prison. While 1,825 days have gone by for us, the pen pals' annual statement lists how many days they have already served towards release, then as now: 0, and how many days are left until release: death.

Concept and realisation are by Lara-Joy Bues, Katarina Eckold, Markus Schäfer and Markus Schmans. Set design is by Konstanze Grotkopp and CassidyAndTheKid (2021), lighting design by Anahí Pérez and Rio Theis, voices by Marie Jordan, Ronja Losert and Laura Naumann, drawings by Rosanna Merklin, and outreach by Daria Bertram.
