Al Murray is an English stand-up comedian, actor and broadcaster born Alastair James Hay Murray on May 10, 1968, in Stewkley, Buckinghamshire. He read Modern History at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, performed with the Oxford Revue, and began his career working alongside Harry Hill on BBC Radio 4.

About Al Murray

Murray is best known for The Pub Landlord, a blustering, faux-patriotic English publican persona he first performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1994. The character won him the Perrier Award in 1999 and was later voted the sixteenth greatest stand-up act by Channel 4. The Pub Landlord became the basis of the Sky One sitcom Time Gentlemen Please and the ITV chat show Al Murray's Happy Hour.

Murray is also a military historian who has written eight books, including Watching War Films with My Dad (2013), Command: How the Allies Learned to Win the Second World War (2022) and Victory '45 (2025), co-written with James Holland. In 2015, performing in character as the satirical "Free United Kingdom Party", he stood as a parliamentary candidate in South Thanet against Nigel Farage.

Murray continues to tour stand-up as the Pub Landlord and co-hosts the history podcast We Have Ways of Making You Talk with James Holland, alongside television work including Fact Hunt.
