About The Damned

Their debut single, "New Rose" (1976), released on Stiff Records, is widely regarded as the first British punk single, and their debut album Damned Damned Damned followed in 1977. Later albums such as Machine Gun Etiquette (1979) and The Black Album (1980) saw the band move away from straightforward punk toward a darker, more theatrical sound, a shift that culminated in the gothic rock and psychedelic textures of Phantasmagoria (1985).

That evolution, paired with Vanian's baritone vocals and vampiric stage persona, made the Damned an early and influential reference point for the goth subculture even as their punk-era songs were later covered by bands including Guns N' Roses and the Offspring. The band has undergone numerous lineup changes over five decades while Vanian and Captain Sensible have remained constants.

The Damned remain active, with drummer Rat Scabies rejoining in November 2023 alongside Vanian, Captain Sensible and keyboardist Monty Oxymoron; the band released the albums Darkadelic (2023) and Not Like Everybody Else (2026).
